CPA Alberta has been presenting monthly Brown Bag Lunch Seminars for a little more than a year now. Attendance at the seminars has been growing since the first offerings in the fall of 2014, and feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive.
Want to know more about this great service for members? Check out these five frequently asked questions and learn more about what Brown Bag Lunch Seminars can do for you!
What happens at a Brown Bag Lunch Seminar?
Seminars are usually scheduled from 11:50 am to 1:20 pm, and include a 45-60-minute presentation followed by an opportunity to network with the presenter(s) and other attendees. Depending on presenter schedules, start times may be up to 10 minutes earlier or later, but will be specified clearly in the event information and on the registration page.
When do they take place?
Brown Bag Lunch Seminars take place monthly. We typically aim for the third Tuesday in Calgary, and third Thursday in Edmonton (though we occasionally have to work around other CPA events). Participants are not required to attend the networking portion, and may leave as soon as the presentation is over if time is tight.
Can anyone attend?
While most of our workshops, programs, and events are open to members, candidates and students, Brown Bag Lunch Seminars are for designated CPA Alberta members only; membership has its privileges!
Are these events just for job seekers?
We’ve had numerous members ask this question, both about the Brown Bag events and about Career Services in general. While job search support is probably the most visible of Career Services’ offerings, we strive to provide value to the entire membership and are working hard to develop services and events that focus on career planning and career development support for individuals currently employed.
With that in mind, we’ve developed and offer Brown Bag seminars in two topic streams: job search and career advancement. Job search topics include resumes and cover letters, LinkedIn, strategic job search, interviews, and networking while career advancement topics range from networking in the workplace to performance reviews, to retirement planning, to attending networking meetings.
Job seekers are not excluded from attending career advancement seminars, and having a job does not preclude a member from attending a job seeking skills seminar; thus, you’re likely to find a good mix of individuals at each seminar.
Is lunch provided?
As the name would suggest, Brown Bag seminars are “BYOL.” Seminars are free to attend, and CPA Alberta provides the venue and presenter(s) and takes care of registrations and scheduling. You bring a brown bag lunch or pick something up on the way over. Eating during the presentation is expected, and you’re welcome to exchange with a classmate if you don’t like what mom gave you!
If you’re interested in attending one of the seminars, we’ve listed a few upcoming sessions below. You can save the dates in your calendar, and look out for official announcements and registration details on the CPA Alberta website, in member communications, or on social media.
We hope to see YOU at a future Brown Bag Lunch Seminar!
