In survey after survey, public speaking places at the top of the list of admitted fears (even above death). For introverts, and those who are on the shy side, being at a networking event, in a room surrounded by strangers, probably comes in a close second. A few tips and tricks can help make networking more enjoyable, and here are a couple:
- Set a goal: Before an event, decide how many people you want to meet. Make it a game – you can’t leave until you hand out a pre-determined number of business cards, or have initiated a minimum number of conversations. Start small and increase your goal over time. This will help you get used to networking and eliminate some of the anxiety along the way.
- Get there early: Don’t start your networking adventure by arriving at events “fashionably late.” It’s hard, particularly if you’re not outgoing, to create a presence once the room is crowded and everyone there has already gathered in small groups. Strive to get there before the groups form to make sure you aren’t left out of the mix.
